The Kennesaw Mountain High School orchestra program is structured in a way that meets the needs and skill level of each student. We have three orchestras – Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonia Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra – with the goal that each student is placed in an orchestra that best suits their abilities and goals and have room for growth. The program is structured to be an equal mix of fun and rigor, allowing the students to be challenged but feel proud of their performances at the end of each concert cycle.
Students in the KMHS Orchestra program are consistent members in the District 12 Honor Orchestra, Georgia All-State Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Georgia’s Governor’s Honors Program.
We strive to bring in working professional musicians to work with the students and to help them grow. Thanks to the generous support of our KMHS Orchestra Boosters, we have had the opportunity to work with Helen Kim (Violin, KSU), Charae Kruger (Cello, KSU), Nathaniel Parker (Conductor, KSU), and Tamara Dworetz (Conductor, GSU). In addition to in-person visits, we have had virtual visits from Eric Whitacre, Kirt Mosier, and Brian Balmages. We also bring in section coaches with regularity to help fine tune each section within the orchestra. Graduating students from the program have gone on to attend schools such as the Juilliard School, the Jacobs School at Indiana University, Peabody Conservatory, The Cleveland Institute, Cincinnati Conservatory, and more.
